WoW Herbalism
Herbalism is a World of Warcraft profession that involves the collection of herbs throughout zones. Players must simply train this profession and activate the skill and the locations of herbs will be provided on their mini map. The herbs require a certain skill level in order to harvest and lower level herbs are found in lower level zones and higher level herbs are found in higher level zones. In order to increase a character's herbalism skill level herbs must be harvested and as these herbs are collected (assuming the skill level to harvest is not grey) the herbalism skill will increase, allowing for the collection of higher level herbs.
The herbs gathered through herbalism are used in tradeskill formulas, with the vast majority being used for alchemy. Those who train alchemy usually train herbalism in order to get the supplies they need to make potions. Since most herbs are used for alchemy many herbalists are also alchemists; however, there are some herbalists who simply collect herbs in order to sell them on the auction house for a profit.
A major drawback to herbalism is that herbs are scattered across the zones in World of Warcraft. Some types of herbs are found underwater, while some may be found near mountains, but none of them are neatly planted in rows for players to collect large quantities in one location. Instead, players must run around looking for herbs as they fight through mobs and the time spent running from one herb to another can really add up. This is especially true for lower level players who spend much time farming herbs without mounts.
Any race and class can train herbalism but Tauren's have a passive racial ability of slightly increased herbalism. So if you are thinking of being Horde and are considering herbalism, consider playing a Tauren. However, any race or class will do, and the bonus provided by the passive ability really isn't that significant.
Herbalism is a gathering profession which best suites characters who have alchemy trained or those who are looking to make some gold by selling alchemy supplies on the auction house. If you don't like the idea of spending a lot of time running around looking for herbs then herbalism might not be the right profession for you. But if you think you are up for the challenge of being an herbalist or are already an herbalist, happy gathering!
